The reference to Arnol'd is a bit misleading. Indeed Arnol'd writes about first integrals, but not in particular in the referenced book. A much better reference would be his book titled Ordinary Differential Equations. Consider as a reference: Arnol'd, V.I., Ordinary Differential Equations (New York, 1992)

In chapter 2 section 10.5, page 125, Arnol'd explains this subject very clearly.
